Unsurprisingly, the Beauty Myth Still Topical

Watch this New York Times video about photo retouching. Then you can click over here for some contrast. Not that those represent anything like a "golden age in socialist advertising" (what a concept...), but at least the people you see in them are not a cocktail of several bodies with extended legs.

That video is crazy! I figured most pics in magazines were retouched a bit but had no idea it could be so much! If only more people knew that...and believed it.

Funnily enough, I was just re-reading some of the Beauty Myth last night. Would love an intellectually rigorous update.

Some cosmetics' companies got in trouble with the Advertising Standards Agency in the UK in recent years, and I've seen small print on mascara ads that points out that the model is wearing false eyelashes, and a caveat on a shampoo ad to say that the celeb in question has extensions. I'd love to see more of that.

I can't say I was very surprised by the video, although I love the bit when the guy says one of the images was composed out of pictures of four different women.

I agree with Kim: if only more people realized the extent to which the images are edited.

I would love to have those notes you mention, Bowleserised (I haven't seen any! Have to keep my eyes peeled for them), but in magazines, right by the images, to the point of explosion of absurdity.

As I said in a comment to your post about Glamour "going" "plus size" (they wish they were so bold) -- I want a revolution!
